03The work·30 min workshop

Your job when coaching the coach

Your job is not to solve every coaching problem for coaches. Your job is to help them reflect, read what's underneath, practice, and improve.

01Teach

§Inspire coaches to do hard things and connect their own self-work to how they coach students.

§Give them the space they need to avoid burnout.

§Show the respect of having a challenging conversation when needed.

§Help the coach maintain healthy boundaries with students and parents.

§Help coaches separate the student's struggle from their own worth as a coach.

§Model the behavior you want your coaches to exhibit.

02Practice
Scenario

A coach texts you Sunday night, panicked: 'I don't know what to do with M. He didn't turn anything in again. Can you tell me what to say?'

03Reflect
Reflectionsaved

When did you last hand a coach a fish instead of teaching them to fish? What pulled you there?

04Take it with you
Use it with your coaches this week

Default question instead of default answer.

  • 1Pick three moments this week where your instinct is to answer. Ask a question instead.
  • 2Pick one coach you're rescuing. Tell them, gently: 'I'm going to stop solving this one for you.'
Signal it's landing

A coach brings you a problem with a draft of their own answer attached.
